The Classroom Technology Officers (CTO) program is a unique opportunity for students to learn the same skills used by IT and MIS professionals, while helping their schools at the same time. Originally piloted by San Carlos School District (SCSD) several years ago, the program was later expanded to include other districts, through the generosity of a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. A few years later, we added the more advanced Build a Computer workshop, which walks students through the construction of a very capable, working computer to take home. The computers are based on Intel Pentium 4 processors and run Windows XP Pro (and, if desired, Linux). They feature ultraviolet-sensitive plexiglass cases that glow when powered on. Most recently, we have added a third workshop, Program a Robot, where students assemble a small "floor turtle" type of mobile robot from a kit, and then learn the rudiments of computer programming as a means to control the sensors and actions of the robot.
